Our Holiday Adventure!

Monday 9th April 2001 - Stopping by the Hoover Dam on the way to Las Vegas

Our stay at Flagstaff was great. We had visited the Grand Canyon and the mountain forests of Arizona and had experienced the amazing contrast in landscapes and climates. We really wanted to go see the Monument Valley within the Indian Navajo Nation around 100 miles further East of Flagstaff but really needed another day in our schedule to do so. Hey ho - maybe next time! Today we set off for Las Vegas - back up West on I-40 and then onto US-93 North to Las Vegas. This journey would take around 4 hours to cover around 250 miles. Along the way - around 20 miles from Las Vegas itself - we yet again encounter the great Colorado river - this time crossing it (and the Arizona/Nevada state border) over the magnificent Hoover Dam.

A reminder of how far away we were from Los Angeles as we cruised on Interstate 40 westbound towards US-93 on our way from Flagstaff Arizona to Las Vegas Nevada.

US-93 turns from a dual carriageway into a winding canyon pass road as it gets closer to the Hoover Dam. The dam is a remarkable feat of engineering - all those years ago too!

A picture of the dam. You can see the artificially-created Lake Mead behind the dam - this is the largest man-made lake in the world - and it is a US National Park - a fantastic sailing an recreational area on the Nevada side.

A pic taken from the observation deck of the Visitor's centre.

Looking down into the river, on the Colorado river side of the dam, you can see the power station that supplies 2 million kilowatts of electricity mostly to the people of Los Angeles and Southern California.

Looking out from the top of the dam over Lake Mead.
