Our Holiday Adventure!

Sunday 8th April 2001 - US Route 180 & the Coconino National Forest

I mentioned on the previous page that we had taken a scenic drive using US-180 from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. (The US-180 actually joins the Arizona 64 around 35 miles from the canyon.) This route took us through two forests: the Coconino National Forest and the Kaibab National Forest.

On the way back to Flagstaff from the Grand Canyon, we decided to stop off at various points on US-180 to highlight the diversity of landscape.

We found an Indian trading post at the junction of Arizona 64 and US-180 at the desert edge of a very small town called Valle. The kids pose in front of a decorative tepee next to the store.

A picture of the store itself.

Several miles from Valle into US-180 towards Flagstaff, we spotted this house in the middle of the Arizona desert. Isn't it remarkable that people actually live here? Not shown in this picture is the fact that this house has a fantastic view of a snow-capped mountain range called the San Franscisco Peaks.

Around 20 miles later the terrain changes from desert to beautiful mountain forest. This picture of the elevation marker was taken by Jaz - hanging out of the front passenger window as we drove by.

An opportunity to stop the car, get out and have some fun in the snow!

An amazing view of the San Franscisco mountains as we descend through the Coconino National Forest into Flagstaff.
