Our Holiday Adventure!

Saturday 7th April 2001 - The long drive to Arizona

Today we packed our bags and prepared for a 500 mile drive to our next stop in Flagstaff Arizona. This journey took us through some of the most amazing terrain - cut through by the dual carriageways of the Interstate 40 highway. From the palm trees of LA to the sand and shrubs of the Mojave desert and the rocks and mountains of Northern Arizona.

Just after crossing the California/Arizona state border we pulled off the I-40 to take a pic of the Colorado river. We would next see this great river at the Grand Canyon.

Deserts and mountains as viewed from the I-40 Eastbound.

More Arizona landscape as viewed from our car.

All that driving really took its toll on some of us ...

... although we did stop off along the way a few times. This is a small town in Arizona called Seligman - around 100 miles west of Flagstaff. This town is still living in the cowboy past and its later importance in the history of the old Route 66 - which runs through it.

The OK Saloon on Seligman's Route 66.

We finally reach our hotel in Flagstaff. This is also on the old Route 66. There was a distinct chill in the air - and we spotted the remains of previously fallen snow on the ground. Not a good sign - but then I suppose we were at over 5000 feet in altitude - and there was cold weather front over much of the US.
