Our Holiday Adventure!

Wednesday 11th April 2001 - Historic Route 66

We were kind of glad to leave Las Vegas - it was an amazing place - and had to be seen to be believed - but the town very obviously caters for visiting Americans (as well as lots of Japanese tourists) who want to spend their hard-earned money on slot machines - and every hotel is full of "all you can eat" prime rib and shrimp (that's what Americans call prawns). You could easily spend lots of money here and get very overweight in the process!

Anyway - we hit the road again - this time heading back on the US-93 South towards Kingman Arizona. From there we took the historic Route 66 through the Black mountains on our way to Lake Havasu City - and a pilgrimage to the original London Bridge that was rebuilt there.

Jaz took this picture of a "dinosuar" of an American juggernaut - one of the hundreds that we passed on our driving adventure. Hope you enjoy this pic!

At Kingman we split off onto Route 66. This is a breathtaking drive. Called the "back country" route - it is a very solitary route which starts off straight and as we headed into the Black Mountains it became very winding - often having to slow down to 15mph to negotiate some of the precarious cliff-hanging bends in the road!

Stopping off at the top of one of the cliffs, Jaspal starts to get a very dizzy feeling as he poses reluctantly for this pic.

Quite by accident, we stumbled across a quaint Amercian town in the middle of Route 66 in the mountains called Oatman. This place is very obviously living in the past - and the tourists who stop off here to look around provides the incentive!

Oatman's Hard Rock Cafe.

Oatman was a thriving town many years ago - most of the settlers here were gold miners. Now it only has 300 residents - but you can still buy gold ore from the gift shops - obtained from nearby historic gold mines.

Oatman's main (and only) street - with an amazing mountain landscape in the background - this place is surreal.
